Duncan Slade has been promoted to the position of Deputy Managing Editor for Mountain State Spotlight.
He joined Mountain State Spotlight in June 2022 and had been serving as the organization’s Audience Manager. The change is effective immediately.

“Duncan did amazing work as Audience Manager, getting our stories in front of more West Virginians,” said Managing Editor Erica Peterson. “This will translate well to his new role, where he’ll continue to work with our reporters to incorporate the experiences and perspectives of West Virginians from all parts of the state into our stories.”
Duncan is a 2022 graduate of West Virginia University, where he served as the editor-in-chief of The Daily Athenaeum. In that job, he led his newsroom through a digital transformation that increased online readership by 128%.
During the summer of 2021, Duncan was an intern at Mountain State Spotlight and produced a detailed story that examined how an ATV trail system in southern West Virginia has not produced as many jobs as had been projected.
He previously reported for West Virginia Public Broadcasting and his work has been published by The Washington Post, NPR and Politifact.
