Mountain State Spotlight is a civic news organization. That means we exist to serve the public interest. And that means we want as many West Virginians as possible to see our stories.

So anyone can republish our stories for free under a Creative Commons license.

To do so, you must credit us and our reporters. We prefer that bylines say, “[Reporter], Mountain State Spotlight.”

At the top of the story, you must include text that says, “This story was originally published by Mountain State Spotlight. Get stories like this delivered to your email inbox once a week; sign up for the free newsletter at”

If you are republishing online, you must link to the original story link on our website. We also ask that you include a link to sign up to our weekly email newsletter, and publish our Mountain State Spotlight logo with the story.

You can’t edit our material, except to reflect relative changes in time, location and editorial style.

You cannot republish our photographs or other visuals without specific permission to do so.

We’d appreciate hearing from you if you republish our stories. Send  any questions about republication of stories to or to Erica Peterson, our managing editor, at
