Mountain State Spotlight is pleased to announce that Josephine Johnson has joined the organization as our environment and energy reporter.
Josephine recently graduated with her master’s degree in multimedia journalism from the University of Maryland, where she reported for Capital News Service, Streetcar Suburbs and the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. Her reporting with the Howard Center on railroad regulatory agencies won an Edward R. Murrow Award in Investigative Reporting.
Her work has also appeared in the Associated Press and The Weekly Ringer, a weekly student-run publication from the University of Mary Washington, where she also served as associate editor and news editor.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Josephine to the team,” said Managing Editor Mary Kay McFarland, “and we’re eager for her to put her skills in data analysis, investigative reporting and multimedia production to use uncovering and telling stories that will help West Virginians understand the issues that affect them.”
As Mountain State Spotlight’s environment and energy reporter, Josephine will report on the impacts that powerful energy industries have on our state’s environment, workers and communities.
Josephine is from southwest Virginia. In her free time, she might be found in a ceramics studio or with her three dogs.
