Tyler Dedrick

Mountain State Spotlight has promoted Tyler Dedrick to the position of deputy managing editor.

Dedrick joined Mountain State Spotlight in 2023 and has been serving as the organization’s audience manager. The change is effective immediately.

In his new role, Dedrick will bring a focus on ensuring our journalism connects with the information needs of West Virginians. His passion for our mission and innovation have helped engage readers in dialogue with our reporters and helped shape our Citizens Agenda approach to election coverage.

“We are excited for Tyler to lend his talent for strategy, his passion for service and his investigative reporting background to this new role,” said Managing Editor Mary Kay McFarland. “As deputy managing editor, he will continue to help reporters share the experiences of West Virginians as they seek to give communities the information they need to make our state a better place.”

Dedrick holds a master’s degree in investigative journalism from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s in journalism and mass communication and a certificate in digital studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He has grown online communities for a variety of companies, including e-commerce stores and a national nonprofit organization. Prior to joining Mountain State Spotlight, he reported on the suburban communities of Madison, Wisconsin for Adams Publishing Group. His reporting work has appeared in The Daily Yonder, Wisconsin Watch, The Associated Press, Wisconsin Inno and Cronkite News.
