We are a local, independent nonprofit newsroom that exists to give West Virginians the news they want, need and deserve about our state.
The best way to stay in the loop about our work is to sign up for our free weekly email newsletter. We’ll send it to you every Monday morning with a curated look at our stories and other news from around our Mountain State.

Since our launch in 2020, we’ve published hundreds of stories, including:
- an investigation into how Kanawha County’s “chemical valley,” one of the state’s few largely Black communities, became one of the most-polluted in the state;
- coverage of how southern West Virginia communities haven’t gotten the returns they’ve been promised from the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trails, and what role related tourism could play in counties like McDowell and Mingo;
- explainers on topics West Virginians need to know more about, including how a federal gun safety bill could play out in the state, the importance of legislative redistricting and the consequences of Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency;
- a deep examination of West Virginia’s struggling foster care system, where kids are sometimes placed in out-of-state homes where there’s a documented trail of abuse or unsafe situations.

We get some of our funding from foundations, including the American Journalism Project, the Emerson Collective and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. But we also get a substantial amount of support from individual West Virginians making donations (both small and large) to ensure everyone in the state will always have free access to our work. You can see more about how we’re funded here.
We also want to hear from you. What’s happening in your corner of West Virginia? Is there something we should look into? You can email, call or text us your tip. Here’s how you can help us investigate.
